Abstract
Mathematical models of coagulation have been used to test hypotheses concerning the relative importance of inhibitors and the mechanisms of coagulation. They have even been used in the development of new anticoagulant drugs. This has been possible because their design is completely transparent, i.e., one knows what species are in the model as well as the kinetics of these species. In the last decade, they have established themselves as a useful, cost-effective tool for supplementing in vitro experiment tests. Mathematical models can thus be compared with the results of conventional laboratory tests used to diagnose coagulopathies, like the PT or aPTT test. In this regard, we present our group’s key results, the most recent being the use of mathematical modeling to understand hypercoagulability induced by COVID-19.
